FOND DU LAC – Firefighters and police responded to a report of a house fire at 30 E. 10th St. Monday afternoon.

At 4:47 p.m., Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue responded to a call for a fire in one of four units in a house.

Fire crews found a fire in the kitchen area and quickly contained and extinguished it, but not before the heat and smoke caused enough damage to render the house uninhabitable for the one adult and three children that lived in the unit, according to the fire department.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but a cat was rescued and given oxygen by members of the Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue department who utilized a special oxygen mask made for small animals.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue was assisted by the Fond du Lac Police Department as well as Alliant Energy.

BEAVER DAM – Gary T. Ballweg, 52, of Fox Lake, has been identified as the man who died when a pickup truck ended up in Beaver Dam Lake Monday morning.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office responded at 6:45 a.m. to the Hickory Point boat launch ramp in the town of Westford for a report of a Dodge pick-up truck in the lake, about 20 yards from shore, according to the sheriff’s office.

Ballweg was located near his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the office, and the Fond du lac County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team searched the surrounding waters but found no other victims.

As of Tuesday morning, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has not made a statement as to how Ballweg’s truck came to be in the lake. The incident remains under investigation.

MADISON – The Senate is slated to approve a bill Tuesday to close the state’s troubled teen prison by 2021 — but likely with changes that could kill the legislation.

The Assembly last month unanimously approved a bill to close Lincoln Hills School for Boys north of Wausau and replace it with smaller, regional facilities.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) has said he doesn’t like aspects of the bill and wants to go a different route. His plan would close Lincoln Hills by 2021, but leave details about where to house those inmates up to future legislation.

Assembly leaders have said they won’t meet again in regular session this year and Fitzgerald has said Tuesday will be the last day of regular session in his house. If both sides stick to their word, nothing will get to Walker’s desk.

It’s one of several bills championed by Walker that may not get to him even though his fellow Republicans control the Legislature.

The legislation comes in response to a 3-year-old criminal investigation into child neglect and prisoner abuse at the teen prison. Lincoln Hills and its sister facility on the same grounds, Copper Lake School for Girls, have also been the subject of multiple lawsuits, including one that forced Walker’s administration to reduce its use of pepper spray and solitary confinement.
